Soy vs. Paraffin Debate

As you know, librarians love to research and share all the fun and interesting things they learn about. I have spent many hours researching all different types of wax and wicks and fragrance oils.

Here are some interesting facts I have  found on my candle making journey:

    • Paraffin vs. Soy  Is one better than the other?  Nope! They both are very different from each other and have different strengths and weaknesses.

Soy wax is a natural product that has these general properties:

  • Soy's greatest advantage is that it is completely renewable.
  • Soy candles tend to burn slower than paraffin.
  • Most soybeans are grown in the USA.
  • Made of either 100% soybean oil or a combination of other non-soy materials (animal products and/or other vegetable products).
  • Clean-burning fuel source - meaning soy wax meets several requirements under federal regulations that classify it as clean-burning.
  • Over 90% of soybean crops in the United States are genetically modified and are grown using pesticides. However, the process that the beans go through does remove the Genetically Modified part of the soybean (if they are GM).
  • Wax cannot be labeled as 100% Organic because at this moment in time, the fields cannot be proven to be 100% non-GMO fields.
  • Soy candles are usually the lightest smelling candles.

Paraffin wax is a natural product that has these general properties:

  • Paraffin wax is a petroleum by-product created when crude oil is refined into gasoline so it uses up a product that would otherwise not be used.
  • Paraffin wax goes through a process to make it food grade and non toxic.
  • Clean-burning fuel source - meaning paraffin wax meets several requirements under federal regulations that classify it as clean-burning.
  • Paraffin candles usually smells stronger as they burn because they can hold more fragrance oil.

BOTH paraffin wax and soy wax can create soot depending on how the candle is made and how it is burning.

BOTH waxes are not toxic and need to pass a series of tests and meet certain standards that are monitored by the US government before they can be marketed as a wax that is safe for use in candles.

LEAD wicks are no longer produced and haven't been for years, so no need to worry about that.
